Manufacturing, production & processing

JD Cooling are experts in temperature control systems. Our bespoke cooling and heating systems can be designed to complement any manufacturing process. This can be a controlled environment in which a product is manufactured or a direct cooling system on a machine tool. We can supply systems that operate with chilled water, thermal oils as well as more traditional direct expansion refrigeration. JD Cooling know how important energy efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gasses is to our customers and will provide expert advice when selecting the right solution on each project.

High Care areas are typically areas where product is being processed in the open and as such could be affected by contaminants.  The key to success for High Care areas is to ensure that they operate with a positive pressure in relation to adjacent areas.  Typically, this is carried out by air handling units also introducing additional filtered, conditioned air with the rate of introduction of air calculated to suit the loss of air from High Care to adjacent areas.  High Care area cooling systems need to be designed to withstand cleaning processes.

High Risk areas are typically areas where product has been through a cooking process to reduce listeria counts and are being processed in the open and as such could be affected by contaminants.  The key to success for High Risk areas is to ensure that they operate with a positive pressure in relation to adjacent areas.  Typically, this is carried out by air handling units also introducing additional filtered, conditioned air with the rate of introduction of air calculated to suit the loss of air from High Risk to adjacent areas.  High risk area cooling systems need to be designed to withstand cleaning processes

Medium care areas are typically at the early stage of food production, such as ingredient preparation areas.  Medium care areas would typically be cooled using air handling equipment with filtration, positive air pressure compared to low care areas and negative air pressure compared to High Care or High-Risk areas.

Low care areas are typically at the start of the food preparation process, with raw materials being handled within the area prior to the main production process.  Low care areas are often cooled using conventional room coolers designed to suit the hygiene requirements of the room.

We offer the following machine cooling services:

  • Injection moulding
  • Blow moulding
  • Blown film
  • Vacuum and thermo forming
  • Extrusion line cooling
  • Liquid condensing process cooling
  • Laser cooling
  • Hydraulic cooling
  • Welding and cutting

Cook Quench Chill processes are used to prepare foods such as pasta that require rapid cooling to prevent over-cooking of the product.  The product is cooked, then immediately cooled using a two-stage process.  The first ‘quench’ stage is often carried out using ambient water to immediately stop the cooking process (and often to remove starch).  The second ‘chill’ stage uses chilled water to bring the product temperature down to the final processing temperature.  Understanding of the production rate and energy efficiency are vital when designing cook quench chill processes.

Ripening of tropical fruit is one of the most challenging part of the logistics process for importers of fruits in the UK. JD Cooling supply and install ripening rooms for bananas, avocado and other stone and tropical fruit. Our system has been specifically designed to provide the optimum ripening conditions whilst being energy efficient and easy to use. Our design utilises renewable heat sources and heat recovered from other cooling process’ on site to create the perfect conditions for the fruit. JD Cooling’s unique system allows precise control and monitoring of air flow, temperature, humidity and most importantly, the level of Carbon Dioxide and Ethylene within the room. Rooms can be monitored remotely via our easy to use on-line system.

Food processing and manufacturing relies on fresh clean water for cleaning, cooking and cooling of products. JD Cooling provide potable water-cooling systems which use WRAS approved components to meet all local water regulations. Batch cold water using insulated water storage tanks are installed to provide sites with cooled fresh water which can be called off whenever the process demands. Alternatively, mains water can be cooled via a heat exchanger to provide cooled water straight out of the tap. We can use existing chilled water systems or a new chilled water system would be installed to suit the exacting requirements of the process.

Brewing, soup production, soaps & shampoo mixing. All of these process’ use a form of temperature-controlled vessel for the manufacture of their individual products. We pride ourselves on our understanding of each client’s specific requirements which means we can provide a bespoke solution to suit any specific application.

Atex areas are areas that have materials / products within them that could lead to the atmosphere being explosive.  The key to designing cooling systems for Atex areas is ensuring that all items within the area cannot provide a source of ignition when the explosive atmosphere is present.  This can be done by detection and isolation, or by manufacturing items that are intrinsically safe to be in the area.
