The Institute of Refrigeration announces the launch of newly extended Fantastic Fridges web site for schools.

As part of the World Refrigeration Day events the IOR is proud to announce the launch of two new sections of www.fantasticfridges.com – its dedicated web site designed to introduce young people to the practical science behind refrigeration technologies and help them to understand the contribution that refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumping makes to modern life – a well as the great career opportunities available.
With age appropriate sections for each key stages (KS), the web site features information, experiments suggestions and interactive games, bringing the cooling world to life for young minds. It covers various aspects of the refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump industry such as basic physics of refrigerators, applications where cooling is vital and how our sector can help tackle today’s big issues including global warming.
It also has a completely new section on careers with profiles, interactive quizzes and information about the new apprenticeship training and employers.
To gain the attention of schools the IOR is also launching a Cool for School competition which aims to challenge KS3 students to explore the science, technology, engineering and mathematical principles that underlie refrigeration processes, and come up with a video of simple experiment or presentation to demonstrate one of these. Some great prizes are up for grabs including £2,000 worth of science kit for the school packed with equipment and books for the winning team’s school.
Further information on the competition and how to take part is available on the www.fantasticfridges.com website as well as an example science experiment video below.
Several leading RACHP businesses including JD Cooling Group are supporting the initiative with prizes.
Commenting on the new web site and on the competition, Miriam Rodway, CEO, Institute of Refrigeration said “we are keen to show students at an early stage how interesting and vital our industry is, and that cooling is part of what keeps our world going! This web site is also a great chance for us to showcase the fantastic job opportunities our industry offers and that it can provide long and fulfilling careers with great potential.”
