Marshalls of Butterwick, established in 1929, were the first grower in the UK of many green vegetables such as broccoli and bellaverde. Now part of Produce World, they are one of the most respected green vegetable growers and distributors in the UK and Europe.

Marshalls had plans to expand their capacity for handling brassica. But to do so, their existing facility needed updating. Marshalls needed a cooling and storage facility to allow them to harvest all of their crop at its peak condition, cool it rapidly and store the produce in chambers, maintaining the highest quality until dispatch to the retailer. The new store needed to provide good product flow and be highly energy efficient, with zero HFC refrigerant gases.

JD Cooling were chosen to provide Marshalls' new cooling plant due to our high level of expertise in designing bespoke cooling systems.

We recommended a system that featured our revolutionary PUF® cooling chambers. Consisting of more than 1 megawatt of cooling, the plant utilises ammonia glycol chillers which deliver highly efficient chilling with a food-safe glycol solution, replacing 90% of the refrigerant gases. State-of-the-art monitoring systems regulate the cooling processes and the latest Ultrasonic Fogging Systems provide storage conditions of 0˚; and 100% Relative Humidity.

The optimum conditions for produce have been achieved at Marshalls. Walking into their new plant feels like stepping into a brassica field on a foggy, winter's morning.

JD Cooling is proud to have been involved in this huge and highly successful project, which has resulted in one of the most energy efficient produce plants in Europe. We are confident this facility will set the standard for the rapid cooling and storage of brassica produce across Europe for the next five years.
